Scenarios Manchester City hopes to avoid in the Champions League quarter-finals

Citizens’ Scenarios in the Champions League: Manchester City stands as the leading contender for securing the Champions League title for the second consecutive season. The team’s recent recovery in terms of results and performance positions them favorably for this pursuit.

Having clinched the title for the first time in its history last season by defeating Inter, City enters the competition with high hopes of defending their title, armed with the necessary resources to achieve this feat.

The Citizens smoothly progressed to the quarter-finals after a convincing victory over Danish Copenhagen (6-2 on aggregate) in the previous round. However, their journey ahead presents formidable challenges, with anticipation building for the draw on Friday to determine their next opponent.

Best Scenario: Facing Borussia Dortmund

Among the other seven teams in the quarter-finals, the most favorable scenario for Manchester City would be to meet Borussia Dortmund. City and Dortmund clashed twice in the group stage last season, with City winning 2-1 at home and securing a 0-0 draw in Dortmund.

Manchester City’s striker Erling Haaland would relish facing his former club, Dortmund, especially in the absence of Jude Bellingham this season. However, Dortmund has welcomed back English winger Jadon Sancho, on loan from Manchester United, who initially honed his skills at City.

Bad Scenario: Facing Atletico Madrid

While challenges may arise if City faces Atletico Madrid, known for their strong defense, City possesses the attacking prowess to overcome such obstacles, particularly through players like Phil Foden, Jeremy Doku, Kevin De Bruyne, and Rodri.

Though the prospect of meeting Paris Saint-Germain could introduce technical uncertainties, given the historic ties of both Guardiola and Luis Enrique to Barcelona, it’s Arsenal, managed by former City assistant Mikel Arteta, that City would prefer to avoid in the quarter-finals.
